Children's Literature
It is critical our students have access to books with characters that look like them, and for their peers to see characters with ID/ASD. Unfortunately, some of the books out there are not great representations. I've created this list of high-quality children's books that have characters with ID/ASD to help you select books for your library. As always, you should preview any book before reading to your students or children.
Books I do NOT recommend:
These books do not have positive representation of children or characters with ID/ASD.
My Friend Has Autism, by Amanda Tourville
Be Good to Eddie Lee, by Virginia Fleming
Talking is Not My Thing, by Rose Robbins
Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome, by Clarabelle van Niekerk
Isaac and His Amazing Asperger Superpowers!, by Melanie Walsh
